On an unforgettable trip to Churchill (Manitoba, Canada) I was able to see and photograph a lot of polar bears and other arctic and sub-arctic wildlife. I was with 21 other bear enthusiasts on a trip with
Frontiers North (a gift from my wife) that was arranged for me by
Cregor Adventures. Not being a 'real' wildlife photographer I didn't have the very powerful lenses that the pros would use but our
Tundra Buggy driver Mark, a keen naturalist and photographer himself, was able to get us close enough to the bears not to need them. Several times he drove away from the action and re-positioned the Buggyand then the bears walked directly to us! Such experience is invaluable. Our leader on the trip was Richard Day a pro photographer from Illinois (
daybreakimagery). The trip also included a lot of education about the area, the wildlife, the people and the geography of the area. Another highlight was an introduction to dog-sledding with Dave Daley and his colleagues at
wapuskadventures. I also got to see, but unfortunately not to photograph, the Aurora Borealis.
