Cahir Castle is one of Ireland's best preserved castles. The main hall has its roof intact and regularly accommodates local functions. The castle has been used in a number of films, including 'Tristan and Isolde' - with Richard Burton, ''Excalibur' and more recently the TV series 'The Tudors'. The portcullis is still operational and on the wall of the hall is a set of antlers from the extinct 'Irish Elk'
Megaloceros. This, at seven feet to the shoulders and with twelve foot wide antlers, was the largest deer to have existed. Despite its name it was not exclusive to Ireland and ranged across Europe, North Africa and parts of Asia.
