The Swiss Cottage - Cahir
A pleasant walk along the river Suir from Cahir Castle leads to a small bridge and access, through a tunnel, to the Swiss Cottage. A 'cottage orné' built in the early 1800s by Richard Butler, 1st Earl of Glengall and designed by the famous Regency architect John Nash— who also designed St. Pauls Church and the Erasmus Smith House in Cahir.

Not 'Swiss' at all but it was called so by the local population at the time and the name stuck. It was used by the Earl and his family for al fresco picnics. This was their way of 'roughing it' away from the castle—albeit accompanied by a retinue of servants.
