Athassel Abbey was built alongside the River Suir. A channel was dug from the river, around the abbey, and back to the river to form an island for protection. This photograph shows one of the large courtyards in the Abbey (also refered to a Athassel Priory). The apparent lean of the tower in the background is an illusion caused by the left-hand wall being broken off at an angle. This must have been an amazing place when it was fully operational.
